In the Hen House

I finally finished a small applique hanging I started earlier this month...it is from the European Sulky site. I didn't have any chicken wire fabric with a light background so I found a free ME design online, used my megahoop (with repositioning) and made my own background. I used little black brads from the scrapbooking section for their eyes. I'm going to hang this up in the sunroom (hopefully high enough so that it won't get too much direct sun) where I have a couple of old egg buckets, a hand buffer and some other chicken related things from the time my parents raised laying hens to help make ends meet.

And then there are the Quail:

We have a lot of quail that live on the back acre in all of the grass, trees and other wild overgrowth. During the winter we can have 30 or 40 wander down the driveway but we rarely see any babies. We think they keep them under cover!

We have had this one pair that are a bit more brave and come up and down the steps outside my sewing room and across the yard and driveway. Just a little while ago I looked out and saw Mama Quail and 3 babies! At this point I didn't know where Dad was, but knew he had to be close by. I grabbed my camera and took this little video of them (through the screen, hence the 'strained' look.

Went upstairs a few minutes later and out on the upper deck, oh, so carefully, and just about that time Sophie (the cat) comes tearing up the stairs and Daddy Quail sounds the alarm and heads to the blue spruce that the quail seem to favor. Mom couldn't leave the babies, though. She tried flying up on the concrete wall but only one of the babies could make it. Finally she came back down and walked down the driveway with them and Dad joined them again, ever on the lookout! Such a lot of fun!

  1. Your wall hanging is totally sweet!! Love it. And the babies are adorable. We used to have them come from the woods and walk down our driveway and through the back yard. Such fun to see them.
